"Open to legal residents of the United States ages 13 years and older at time of entry"
Does that make me a social alien? The idea of a global network, a social citizenship of the internet, and region specific prizes is still problematic isn't it?
Wow... I just entered this contest and was pretty excited about the opportunity to win some great tools to further my cause... I must have glazed over the "residents of the United States" part, and I am a Canadian. What a disappointment. Is there anyway this stipulation can be modified?
Thanks, Dr. Dann, your comment brings up some really important points.
We understand there are a lot of sensitivities around the word “citizen,” especially among Millennials, who often consider themselves “global citizens,” as they are more diverse than previous generations -- and through technology, find themselves connected to and impassioned by events happening across the world. If you, or others, have suggestions on a different, more-inclusive way to describe this initiative we'd like to hear from you.
But for the purpose of addressing your question about the Makeover rules, you’re right, this is a great example of how the reach of technology and the power of the internet exceeds the current external regulatory constraints imposed by the law. Entrants to the Social Citizens Makeover must be legal residents of the United States because if the Contest were open to residents of other countries, then it would have to conform to the laws of each of those countries. Unfortunately, we just don't have the resources necessary to do the legal due diligence that would allow us to permit international entries.
And, entrants must be 13 years of age or older because the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act makes it difficult for us to collect information from people younger than 13.
Sorry Arianna, the competition is already complete - but it's received a really positive response so stay tuned and keep checking the Social Citizens Blog as well as the Case Foundation site at www.casefoundation.org for other opportunities like this one. Cheers! - Kari
