Social Citizens Top Ten, Top-Ten List's for 2008

As the year comes to an end, our stomachs are filled with turkey, our hearts are filled with joy, and our RSS feeds are filled with Top Ten lists.  We couldn’t help but get in on the action, so we’ve compiled some of our favorite lists from the past year --with a social change bent of course. Social Citizens posts will be slowing down until after the new year, but we wish you all a wonderful holiday season. Herewith, in no particular order are the lists that caught our eyes:

  1. Top Ten Movies that Inspired People to Take Part: Gina Telaroli from TakePart shares with us her top movies from '08 that inspire people to put down the popcorn and get up and take action. In her words, "We like movies, but we really really like movies that inspire us to get involved in the world and that teach us about places, ideas and issues."
  2. Top Ten Ways to Get Involved With Entrepreneurship: It seems these days everyone wants to be a social entrepreneur - and if you follow Nathanial Whittermore's ten steps, you just may find yourself off to a good start.
  3. Top Ten Green Blogs Spreading the Word Virally - Eco-friendly, environmentally conscious, change-the-world oriented blogs are popping up every day. Several have achieved success by spreading their messages on social media sites like Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and Yahoo Buzz. We Heart World unveils 10 who have demonstrated a “viral” essence in achieving social media love.
  4. Top Ten Social Networks for Social Change - I stumbled into this list via a facebook group called "Apathy is Boring" out of Quebec. It includes a few social networks we hadn't yet heard of, and some of which we're already big fans.
  5. Top Ten Social Media For Social Change Blogs - Earlier this month, Blogs.com featured it's top social media for social change blogs as compiled by our friend Beth Kanter.  We were excited to make the cut - but even more so to be listed among such great company.
  6. Top Ten Activist Videos of 2008 - Our very own Allison Fine has compiled a list of activist videos that are not necessarily the most viewed, but were chosen because they are effective in sharing a message, highlighting an important issue, or providing visceral evidence of abuse that would not have otherwise been captured. An edgy and provocative list, indeed.
  7. Ten Ways to Change The World Through Social Media - 2008 was a year in which entrepreneurs, activists, and marketers leveraged the social web for positive change in ways never before seen. There are thousands of examples, which is precisely why someone like Max Gladwell exists. In May, Max suggested these 10 were worth exploring.
  8. Ten (More) Ways to Change the World Through Social Media - ...and then in October, he added ten more!!
  9. Top Ten Mashups for Social Change: In March NetSquared opened up voting for their annual Mashup for Social Change. In this Top Ten, Christine Herron shares with us her top picks for projects that would get the most bang for the buck out of combining mashed-up data, exposing it intelligently to the public, and giving communities the opportunity to leverage that information towards change.
  10. Favorite Do Good Books of 2008- Last week Britt Bravo of Have Fun Do Good shared with us her Top "do good" books of 2008.  OK, so maybe Britt only came up with seven “do good” books, but we’re letting her in anyway. We especially like Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody.
