Why Millennials Matter: Discussion with Jean Case

Looking for ways to better engage those in the Millennial generation? Are you interested in developing strategies on how to create a bridge across generations? Or perhaps you just don’t understand why some people care so much about the next generation and what they think?

You’re not alone. We at the Case Foundation have heard questions such as these voiced over the years and across sectors. Through programs like Social Citizens and MCON2012 (Millennial Conference), however we’ve learned a great deal about this group and engaged with thousands of young, passionate, and fearless changemakers.

Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation, shared some of her thoughts on why Millennials matter with Peter Panepento, Assistant Managing Editor at The Chronicle of Philanthropy, to address some of these same questions for MCON2012. You can now watch excerpts from this discussion in a two-part video.

“When they think about changing the world they don’t think about it the way my generation did. They don’t say, okay, I’m going to go into business and I’m going to do this thing to make this difference. Or I’m going into government. They say there’s a challenge or an opportunity I’m trying to meet and I don’t really care which sort of perspective I bring to it. I just want to change the world.” – Jean Case

This is a generation that wants to be heard. Part of what makes defining this generation so challenging, and at the at the Case Foundation, also so exciting, is that they are adopting new technology; fostering transparency; developing new tools, new approaches, and the unique characteristics of their generation—collaboration, openness, cross-sector mindsets, and passion to do good—to create change in fresh ways never before seen.
