Millennial Careers: We Can Work It Out!

Sure, I’ve had more jobs in the past 8 years since I graduated college than my parents have had throughout their entire professional careers — and the funny thing is, the majority of my friends are in the same boat. But that doesn’t mean we’re not dedicated and committed to the causes and organizations we work for, that we don’t respect our superiors or won’t roll up our sleeves and pay our dues.

I found Rebecca Dube’s article in Monday’s Globe and Mail about Millennials and their work ethic both an interesting read and a very fair assessment. It spotlights some new research that helps debunk some of the myths about Millennials in the work force and our general attitudes toward our professional careers. And the research goes on to show that we’re really not all that different from Gen X or Boomers when you get down to it.

The message the article points out is “don’t believe the hype.” We may be more apt to job hop from one gig to the next, but more often than not, the company we hop to is more connected to the community, has a better corporate culture, or offers its employees an opportunity to blend their professional skills and make a difference in the community. This, to us, is a standard we hold in high regard, so don’t be surprised if we’re willing to pack our bags and head down the street or across the country to find it.
